Samsung will sell 1TB drive under $199

Samsung has released a one terabyte (TB) hard drive that’s capable of storing around 40 billion songs (or something near that number perhaps) for only $199, which is less than 100 English pounds. The desire for HD-quality programming and hard disk drive (HDD) recorders has led to an increase in storage capacity, and now the industry is talking about things in TBs rather than GBs. Although only an option for the PC, the EcoGreen F1 from Samsung offers a huge amount of storage for serial downloaders, or, as the Korean electronics company suggests, those with large surveillance capture needs.

Apple’s Mighty Mouse put under lawsuit

The might of Apple’s Mighty Mouse may be tested in court. Man & Machine, a Landover, Md., maker of computer peripherals, on Tuesday filed a trademark-infringement lawsuit against Apple and CBS. ”This action arises from Apple’s use and proposed continued use of the trademark ‘Mighty Mouse’ in violation of M&M’s rights in its own ‘Mighty Mouse’ trademark,“ the complaint states. ”Apple’s use of the ‘Mighty Mouse’ trademark takes place under color of an agreement with CBS purporting to license such use.“ The ”M&M“ in the filing of course refers to Man & Machine, and not the trademarked candy distributed by Mars.

$100 laptop introduces new modern design

The wraps have been taken off the new version of the XO laptop designed for schoolchildren in developing countries. The revamped machine created by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project looks like an e-book and has had its price slashed to $75 per device. OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte gave a glimpse of the ”book like“ device at an unveiling event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first XO2 machines should be ready to deliver to children in 2010. Mr Negroponte said he hoped the design would also be used by other manufacturers. The new version loses the green rubbery keyboard, sporting instead a single square display hinged at its centre. This allows the device to be split into two touch screens that can either mimic a laptop with keyboard or the pages of a book. The idea is for several children to use the device at once, combining the functions of a laptop, electronic book and electronic board.

Houston infected with electronic-eating ants

Houston has been hit with a computer bug like no other: a swarm of ants that are eating through electronics. The ”Crazy Raspberry Ants“ are believed to have arrived in Texas aboard a cargo ship, and are causing widespread mayhem. For some unknown reason they are attracted to electrical equipment, which is causing problems for residents in the Deep South. The ants have destroyed PCs in homes and offices, ruined pumps at a sewage treatment plant and even taken a fancy to homeowners’ gas meters, according to reports from the Associated Press. ”If you open a computer, you would find a cluster of ants on the motherboard and all over,“ said Tom Raspberry, the owner of Budget Pest Control and the man the ants have been named after.

Google starts to blur faces in StreetView Maps

After privacy complaints, Google Inc. is beginning to automatically blur faces of people captured in the street photos taken for its Internet map program. Rolling it out will take several months, however. Although Google’s Street View service was not the first to augment online maps with photos, the detail and breadth of images on the site surprised and unsettled many users when it launched last year. As specially equipped Google vehicles cruised city streets snapping panoramic images of homes and businesses, the resulting photos revealed people falling off bikes, crossing the street, sunbathing — everyday, in-public things but nonetheless, things they might not have wanted preserved for posterity.

MySpace wins $230m lawsuit

MySpace has won its legal challenge against two individuals who bombarded its members with spam. Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines were fined a whopping $230m for the spam attacks. However, MySpace is unlikely to see the money since the pair failed to turn up in court and have gone missing. ”The judgement against the spammers is astronomical because each spam message entitles MySpace to $100 in damages under the terms of the Can-Spam Act,“ said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. ”In the war against spam it is right that large companies should have a heavy stick like this to hit the spammers with. But these two are just the tip of the iceberg.

FBI discovers fake Chinese hardware in US gov

The FBI announced Friday that an investigation into counterfeit network components made in China and sold to the U.S. government has recovered about 3,500 fake devices with a value of $3.5 million. The criminal probe, code-named Operation Cisco Raider, was prompted by concerns that counterfeit network components could give hackers access to government databases. But one U.S. official told Reuters that the components discovered by the FBI are not believed to have made government computer systems more vulnerable. The existence of the probe came to light after an unclassified FBI PowerPoint presentation in January on the agency’s efforts to counter the production and distribution of counterfeit network hardware showed up on Abovetopsecret.com.
